During the course of providing curative CDs I researched the differentiation in how left and right-handed listeners pick up sounds of particular frequencies when listening through earphones. My suspicions were proved correct when a study by a psychology master revealed that, indeed, there was a difference in how left and right-handed listeners picked up on sound.
The ‘Journal of Experimental Psychology’ carried findings which revealed how left-handed people deliberate over things quite differently than was first thought. Even down to how a left-handed person makes a choice is all, apparently, because of the use of a particular hand as the dominant one. To date, all of my recent self-help audios carry instructions for left-handers to reverse their stereo headsets.
When you consider a large symphony orchestra may have over a hundred players. There are different sections in such an orchestra. There are more high-pitched instruments on the right hand side of an orchestra. If you are looking at the audience from the stage the higher pitched instruments are usually seated on the right. This means the higher pitches are closer to the players’ right ears and so they will most likely hear the high pitches more clearly. When you look at the situation this way then you can see the conductor of the orchestra is also at a disadvantage! This is because the high pitches are nearer their left ears.
A comprehensive analysis of right-handed people demonstrated how they possess better hearing when listening through their right ear. In the 1991 ‘Previc hypothesis’ Eighty one right-handed and forty five left-handed undergraduates were used in the tests, which were over a prolonged period of listening. The results confirmed that the dominant hand dictated the dominant listening side – neither left nor right-handed listeners having any better hearing, just a more dominant ear. For that reason it is well advised to ensure that when listening to certain therapy based audios that the earphones are used appropriately.
There was found to be a significant connection in the results to substantiate that people with right hand dominance had a definite affinity with their right ears, as did left-handed people with their left ears. This test concluded that the choice of dominant hand was interrelated to regularity of the acoustic sensitivity. Even when each ear of a left-handed listener was played sound to at varied lengths of time there was nothing to show that the right ear was taking over dominance at any point.
When determining if you are a true right-hander or left-hander then you may find the ‘Edinburgh Handedness Inventory’ to be an invaluable tool in assessing the dominance of your right or left hand in everyday activities. The test is a simple tick box set of simple questions. It is well worth using before putting your headphones on when listening to audio therapy programs.
Studies show that left-handedness does not necessarily correspond with left-sidedness. The same applies to the eyes, as we all have a dominant eye, and a dominant foot. You may be right-handed but use your left foot to kick with. Students, it is suggested, are more likely to associate positive ideas with their dominant side and negative ideas with their less dominant side.
Research data indicates that more males are left-handed than females. Even when both parents are left-handed, there is only a 26 percent chance of their child being left-handed. During the days of the French revolution, while in the House of Parliament, those in support of monarchy would sit on the right hand side of the speaker; those in favour of abolishing the monarchy would sit on the left side.
It can be quite annoying for left-handers to have to keep switching their headphones around, but this can be overcome if you are using a headset with multiple cables going to your PC, just change the cables around. You can also swap right to left by going into your PC’s soundcard, if it has this set-up installed.
I do suggest that you experiment with headphone use, though, because the ‘left-brain/right-brain’ approach is speculative and experimental. Everyone processes sensory input differently. Do be aware, however, not all left-handed people have switched brain functions, so experiment when listening to audio therapy programs through headsets.
Nowadays you can get all sorts of gizmos and items for left-handed use: tape measures, pencil sharpeners, scissors, golf clubs, watches and more. You can even get a left-handed boomerang! What about the availability of left-handed headphones? They seem to be a little thin on the ground, and why is this when there are some 700 million left-handers in the world?
As a child, Stephen Richards was a natural left-hander, but he was forced to write with his right hand by an anachronistic education system. He now produces self-help CDs and runs manifesting workshops. The ‘Edinburgh Handedness Inventory’ is an ideal resource to find your dominant hand.
