Open Question: What is the best way to lose weight?
A diet would be good. Any recomendations? *I’m a vegetarian/vegan*
thnx^-^
Open Question: Return to meat after 3 years due to anemia?
I have been a very strict vegetarian/vegan for the past three years (I eat the odd bit of cheese and chocolate now and then but you could hardly call it often). Recently I have been feeling incredibly tired and run down and after a blood test a few months ago I was told I am slightly anemic. What I’m worried about is being a 6ft 5 guy, young and with the future ahead and having health problems so young such as an iron deficiency. I’m thinking of perhaps reintroducing some meat back into my diet such as a steak once a week.
I’m not doing this because I want to eat meat again, I hate the stuff and the smell and sight of it makes me feel sick so eating it again would be a challenge but do you have any advice? Also, I think I’d only eat steak, everything else makes my stomach churn just at the thought!
Thanks!
Resolved Question: Mothers of vegetarian children?
I heard on the news a study has shown that vegetarian children are shorter than meat eaters. The study said that when young children have their growth spurts, after months of little growth, vegetarian children don’t grow as much because they lack the vitamins and minerals that their meat-eating peers have. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 14. My son is 22 months old and has been vegetarian since he was 18 months. I go to a lot of effort to ensure his diet is varied and we eat a lot of legumes, nuts and seeds for iron and zinc. He also eats quite a bit of dairy and is still breastfed. I made the decision to raise my son vegetarian for ethical reasons but also because vegetarian children and adults are usually healthier than those who eat meat and have a decreased risk of heart disease and cancer and perform better academically (according to two studies). Lately I’ve been reading a lot of negative press and studies about vegetarianism. I don’t want to do anything which could jeopardise my son’s physical or mental development so for those who have vegetarian (or even vegan) children, has your child developed normally? As in, are they average or above in their height? Do they perform well in school? Are they in good general health and have you had any concerns?
Thanks.
No, I’m not living my life based on two studies.
I should have been clearer
Two studies have shown that vegetarian children perform better academically.
There are a number of health benefits to being vegetarian
I was simply wondering if there was truth in the study that showed vegetarian children are shorter.
I have a lot of knowledge on nutrtion but I still worry about my son’s dietary needs. There is still little info on vegetarian children.
Thank you! I have a diploma in nutrtion so I am aware of what steps need to be taken to ensure a healthy, varied diet. We do have fortified soy milk and b12. I feel that, for children, a vegetarian diet is more practical and healther than vegan. Most vegetarians do have a good knowledge of nutrtion and are already ensuring their children eat a varied diet with adequate vitamins, minerals and protein. And many supplement as well. Which is why that particular study concerned me. I was worried that perhaps there was something I was missing or some other reason stopping vegetarian children from growing as well as their meat-eating peers. But as you said, many vegetarian cultrues are thriving and are certainly a lot healther than western countries.
